John Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell

John Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell ( * 1454, † September 9, 1513 at the Battle of Flodden Field), was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

His father was John Maxwell, 3rd Lord Maxwell ( or "Master of Maxwell" ); his mother was Janet Crichton, a daughter of George Crichton, 1st and last Earl of Caithness.

With the death of his father on April 29, 1486, he took over land ownership and title 4th Lord Maxwell, after he had inherited the lands of Carnsalloch by his grandfather Robert already on May 8, 1485. Also in 1486 he was named " Warden of the West Marches ", from 1488 he was a member of the first Parliament of King James IV.

On July 30, 1508 there was a major dispute, sold in the course of which he and his followers the Lord of Sanquhar from Dumfries, but the laird of Dalzell, of Creichlaw and some others killed. For this act he was sentenced by the king to prison, in addition he had to pay as punishment for his army of involved a large sum of money. He was Freedmen 1510-1512.

By his marriage, closed between 15 February 1491 and 20 February 1492 Agnes Stewart, daughter of Alexander Stewart of Garlies, he had a son; Robert (later 5th Lord ) and a daughter; Mary.
