John Montagu (colonial secretary)

John Montagu (* 1797, † 1853) was from 1843 to 1853 British Colonial Secretary of the Cape Colony.

He promoted the construction of roads to facilitate trade and thereby stimulate the economy. In order to keep costs low for road, he sat in a big way prisoners. During his tenure, many passes and roads that today represent some important transport links emerged. According to him, the little village of Montagu and Montagu Pass were named.
