John Nevill, 5th Marquess of Abergavenny

John Henry Guy Nevill, 5th Marquess of Abergavenny, KG, OBE (* November 8, 1914, † 23 February 2000) was a British peer, soldier and politician.

Life and career

Nevill was born on November 8, 1914 as the son of Guy Larnach - Nevill, 4th Marquess of Abergavenny and Isabel Nellie Larnach.

He attended Eton College and Trinity College.

In 1936 he became an officer in the Life Guards, and served in World War II.

In 1945 he became an officer of the Order of the British Empire and in 1946 Lieutenant - Colonel. Nevill was Ehrencolonel ( Honorary Colonel) the tradition of unity Kent Yeomanry 1949 to 1961 and from 1961 to 1962 the Kent and County of London Yeomanry.

He was a member of the East Sussex County Council 1947-1954 and 1954-1962 County Alderman for East Sussex.

He was also Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex in 1955, Vice - Lieutenant of Sussex from 1970 to 1974 and later became the first Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex From 1974 until 1989. Apart from his military and political career, he was also director of Massey Ferguson 1955 to 1985, Director of Lloyds Bank from 1962 to 1985; Chairman ( Chairman ) of Lloyds Bank South - East Regional Board from 1962 to 1985 and director of Whitbread Investment.

Membership in the House of Lords

Nevill inherited after the death of his father in 1954, the title of Marquess of Abergavenny and Baron Abergavenny, and then the associated seat in the House of Lords. There he sat as a cross Bencher.

On June 11, 1992, he pronounced his oath. This is his only entry in Hansard.

His seat he lost by the House of Lords Act 1999. For one of the remaining seats he had not set up for election.

Honors and other offices

In 1976 he was Knight of St John, 1974 Knight of the Garter and was Chancellor ( Chancellor ) of the Order of 1977 until 1994.

1986 Honorary Doctorate of Doctor of Law from the University of Sussex, he was awarded.

Family

Nevill married on January 4, 1938 Patricia Harrison ( 1915-2005 ). They had five children, four daughters and one son.

He died in 2000 at the age of 85 years. Then the son died before him, inherited his title as his nephew Christopher Nevill, 6th Marquess of Abergavenny ( b. 1955 ).
