John Newcombe

John David Newcombe (* May 23, 1944 in Sydney) is an Australian former tennis player.

Biography

In his youth Newcombe operating many different sports until he opted for tennis. He was the Australian junior champion in 1961, 1962 and 1963 and in 1964 a member of the Australian Davis Cup winning teams. He won his first Grand Slam tournament in 1965, when he with his fellow countryman Tony Roche won the Australian Open in doubles. In the same year, the duo also won the title at Wimbledon.
