John Nicholson (New York)

John Nicholson ( * 1765 in Herkimer, New York, † January 20, 1820 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1809 and 1811 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Nicholson grew up during the British colonial period. He received a limited education. Nicholson studied law, was admitted to the bar and began to practice. He held various local offices. Between 1782 to 1785 he represented the Ulster County and in 1810 the Orange County in New York State Assembly.

As opponents of a strong central government, he joined at that time, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1808 for the 11th Congress, he was in the tenth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Josiah Masters on March 4, 1809. He retired after March 3, 1811 from the Congress.

On January 20, 1820, he died in Herkimer.
