John of Foix, Viscount of Narbonne

John of Foix (* after 1450; † November 5, 1500 in Etampes ) was Count of Etampes and Viscount of Narbonne.

He was the third son of Gaston IV, Count of Foix and Eleanor of Navarre. His older brother was Gaston de Foix, Prince of Viana. From his father he received the Vice- county Narbonne.

He married in 1476 Maria of Orléans, sister of the future French king Louis XII, with whom he had two children.:

  • Gaston, Duke of Nemours, a French general, X in 1512 at the Battle of Ravenna
  • Germaine (1488-1538) ∞ Ferdinand II, King of Aragon (House Trastámara )

From the French king, he received the County of Etampes.

After the death of his nephew Franz Johann Phoebus 1483 claimed the throne for himself in Navarre, on the basis that Salian law, which was, however, never applied in Navarre. The result was a war between John and his niece Catherine of Navarre, who had become the successor of her brother, and could only be resolved in favor of Catherine in 1497. In a closed in Tarbes contract Johann was forced to abandon his claims. He died three years later.
