John of Sahagún

John Gonzalez (* 1430 in Sahagún, Spain, † June 11, 1479 in Salamanca) is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

John Gonzales came in fulfillment of a vow in 1463 the Order of Augustinian Hermits, and where he received a theological education. He ran for many years as Prior the fortunes of his monastery in Salamanca. According to tradition he was allegedly repeatedly graced with mystical experiences and have raised the dead. He was canonized in 1690 by Pope Alexander VIII.

Representation

John Gonzales is shown in the black habit of the Augustinian Hermits, usually with a chalice, above which hovers a host. Representations of his life and miracles show numerous frescoes in the monastery church of S. Spirito in Florence.
