John Paul Jones (athlete)

John Paul Jones (* October 15, 1890 in Washington, DC; † January 5, 1970 in Tucson ) was an American middle distance runner.

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, he left more than 800 m in the flow and finished fourth over 1500 meters.

In 1911 he won the mile run the IC4A Championship in 4:15,4 min, the hitherto fastest time of an amateur ( had the world record for professionals Walter George 1886, 4:12 ¾ minutes set up ). 1912 and 1913 he defended his IC4A title over this distance. His time of 1913 ( 4:14,4 min) was recognized by the IAAF as the first official world record. 1911 and 1912 he was also IC4A champion over 880 yards.

John Paul Jones graduated in 1913 from Cornell University.
