John Robertson (footballer born 1953)

John Neilson Robertson ( born January 20, 1953 in Uddingston South Lanarkshire, Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player and current football coach.

Playing career

John Robertson launched in 1970 his career as a professional football player at Nottingham Forest. After five years, he made second-class in the 1976/77 season with his team to promotion back to the Football League First Division. He was able to achieve six goals in 41 league games. In the Football League First Division 1977/78 his team managed to sensation, to win the championship as promoted ahead of FC Liverpool. Robertson succeeded in doing an excellent season with twelve goals in 42 games. Training was the team of Brian Clough, with the Forest late 70s or early 80s had its most successful period in the club's history.

The following season was very successful and was able to get 2nd place in the Football League First Division 1978/79 and winning the National Champion Cup will be completed in 1979. In the final of the Swedish champions Malmö FF in Munich was defeated 1-0. Trevor Francis scored the winning goal.

As defending national champion Nottingham started in Cup in 1980 and won the title in Madrid with a goal by Robertson 1-0 against Hamburger SV. In the First Division in 1980, it was enough for a fifth place. The title hat-trick did not succeed in the national champion - Cup 1981, already in the first round failed in the Bulgarian champions CSKA Sofia Forest and also in the league was in the end only 7th place

In July 1983, he moved to rivals Derby County and returned in August 1985 back once again for a season to Nottingham Forest. In 1986 he finished his successful professional career at the age of 33 years.

In the following years he worked as chief scout and assistant coach with his former team-mate Martin O'Neill. This activity led him to positions at Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City and Celtic Glasgow in 2006 to Premier League club Aston Villa, where he works today.

Scottish national

Between 1978 and 1983 John Robertson played 28 caps for Scotland in which he scored 8 goals. The highlight of his national team career was participating in the World Cup 1982 in Spain. He scoring in a 5-2 opening win against New Zealand his only goal of the tournament. After a 1:4 defeat against Brazil and a 2-2 draw against the Soviet Union Scotland difference in the preliminary round of in third place.
