John Rufus Edie

John Rufus Edie (* January 14, 1814 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, † August 27 1888 in Somerset, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Edie attended the public schools of his home and then the Emmitsburg College in Maryland. Then he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Subsequently, he worked for several years as a school principal in Gettysburg. After studying law and his 1840 was admitted as a lawyer, he started in Somerset working in this profession. Between 1847 and 1850 he was deputy and 1850-1854 actual district attorney in Somerset County. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In the years 1845 and 1846 he was a member of the Senate of Pennsylvania.

In the congressional elections of 1854 Edie was a candidate of the opposition party in the 18th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John McCulloch on March 4, 1855. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1859 two legislative sessions. These were shaped by the events leading up to the Civil War. Since 1857, John Edie represented the Republican Party, whose member he had become. In 1858 he gave up another candidacy.

During the Civil War John Edie served as an officer in the army of the Union, in which he rose to the brevet colonel. He then practiced as a lawyer again. He died on 27 August 1888 in Somerset, where he was also buried.
