John Russell (actor)

John Lawrence Russell ( born January 3, 1921 in Los Angeles, California, † January 19, 1991 same place ) was an American actor in film and television.

Life

Russell attended the University of California as a Freshman. At the start of the Second World War, he went to the United States Marines, with which he participated as a lieutenant in the Battle of Guadalcanal. He returned as a highly decorated veteran home.

For the film, he was discovered during a visit to a restaurant in Beverly Hills by a talent scout. In 1945 he stood for the first time on camera, after he received a contract with 20th Century Fox. Russell worked primarily as a supporting actor in westerns and later went to the film company Republic Pictures. In 1952 he had his first starring role alongside Judy Canova in Oklahoma Annie. In 1955 he received the lead role in the television drama Soldiers of Fortune. This half-hour broadcasts put him together with his partner, played by Chick Chandler, in dangerous jungle adventure. The program was discontinued in 1957 due to lack of interest adult viewers.

The following year, 1958, Russell was then placed in his most famous role as Marshal Dan Troop, actors of the ABC western series Lawman. His companion was Deputy Marshal Johnny McKay, played by Peter Brown.

In 1959, he had more film roles, including in Howard Hawks Western Rio Bravo with John Wayne, Dean Martin and Walter Brennan. From the 1960s to 1980s, he appeared in more than 20 films as a supporting actor, including in three films of his friend Clint Eastwood.

John Russell died from emphysema and was buried at the Los Angeles National Cemetery.
