John S. Collins

John Stiles Collins ( born December 29, 1837 in Moorestown, New Jersey, † February 11, 1928 in Miami, Florida ) was an American Quaker farmer. He is considered one of the founders of Miami Beach.

Collins came to Miami in 1896 to inspect his involvement in a coconut farm. However, attempts to use the area for agriculture were not very successful.

Collins in 1912 together with his son Thomas J. Pancoast to develop the idea that scarcely inhabited and covered with mangrove trees island of Miami Beach as a residential and recreational area. By 1913, Miami Beach could only be reached by boat from Miami. With the help of Carl G. Fisher Collins built a wooden bridge in place today is the Venetian Causeway ( Venetian Islands ).

In Miami Beach's Collins Avenue and Collins Canal named after John Collins.

With his wife Jane had John Collins 3 sons ( Arthur, Irving and Lester ) and a daughter (Katherine ), who were involved in his undertakings.
