John Sawers

Sir Robert John Sawers, KCMG, ( born July 26, 1955 in Warwick ) is a British diplomat. Since November 2009, he leads the Secret Intelligence Service ( MI6 ).

Life

He had four siblings and grew up in Bath. He attended the Beechen Cliff School, where his hurdling record should be unbroken to this day. He studied physics and philosophy at the University of Nottingham, University of St Andrews, Witwatersrand University. His wife Shelley is a teacher. They have three adult children.

From 1993 to 1995 Sawers was private secretary Douglas Hurd and got a year is a Fellow International Fellowship at Harvard University.

In 1996 he joined the Foreign Service of the British Embassy in Washington, where he led a team to 1998, which focused on foreign and defense issues.

From January 1999 until the summer of 2001 at the time of the Kosovo conflict, he was a foreign policy adviser to Tony Blair, further he was in the Northern Ireland conflict involved in the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
