John Siberch

Johann Lair (* in Sieglar 1476 - today Troisdorf- Sieglar; Siegburg1554 ), also called John (Johannes) Siberch, John Lair to Sigbergh, Johann Lair of Siegburg, Ioannes Siburgus Jan Siborch, the founder of the first university printing was in Cambridge, England and is known with Erasmus of Rotterdam.

Life and work

John Lair was born in 1476 as the son of Mr and Mrs Peter and Lena from Lair ( Laer = Sieglar ) in Sieglar. At the age of 11 he moved with his parents to Siegburg. At age 16, he enrolled on 5 December 1492 Johann de Syberch at the Faculty of Arts in the bursa Montana the Medieval University of Cologne. Probably he received in the course of the following years, the minor orders and then made in Cologne an apprenticeship as a printer and bookbinder. Probably before 1520 he married a daughter of Cologne bookseller Gerhard Amersfoort and was working as a traveling bookseller for his brother Franz Birckmann, printers on the High Street in Cologne.

From 1520 to 1523 John Lair lived in Cambridge as a bookseller, printer and bookbinder. There he was named after its place of origin John Siberch ( Siburgus ). His first published works is " Oratio habita ad Cantabrigiae D. Thomam Cardinalem ", the speech made by Henry Bullock occasion of the visit of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey 1520 in Cambridge. In this document, we find for the first time in book printing an imprint: " Impressa per me Ioannem Siberch " "Overall, slightly more than 10 products of the printing house of John Siberch are delivered, among others.: .

1523 closed Siberch his Offizin after the death of his wife and disappeared to Antwerp, in 1526 likely to Cologne. He was ordained a priest in 1538 ago and lived from 1544 under the name " John Lair " or " Johannes Venter " until his death in 1554 as curate at St. Servatius in Siegburg.
