John Smith (New York politician born 1752)

John Smith ( * February 12, 1752 in Mastic, Suffolk County, New York; † August 12, 1816 ibid ) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican), who represented New York State in both chambers of Congress.

The political career of John Smith began in 1784 when he was first elected to the Suffolk County in the New York State Assembly. There he remained, first to 1785; further terms of office in the House of the New York Legislature followed from 1787 to 1794 as well as 1798 until 1800. In 1788 he took part in the Assembly, which ratified the Constitution of the United States for the state of New York.

After the death of Mr Jonathan Nicoll Havens John Smith was elected as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives. He took his seat on 27 February 1800, and competed twice to successfully re-election. On February 23, 1804, he moved within the Congress in the Senate; earlier he had decided the election to a vacant mandate for itself in this case. This followed the resignation of Senator DeWitt Clinton, whose place first John Armstrong took an interim basis. In 1807 he was confirmed in office; after six more years in the Senate he did not stand for re- election.

From 1813 to 1815 Smith served as U.S. Marshal for the District of New York. Thereafter, he served in the rank of major general in the state militia of New York, until he passed away in his home town of Mastic on 12 August 1816.
