John Spottiswoode

John Spottiswoode (* 1565, † November 26, 1639 ) was a Scottish Archbishop of St Andrews.

Life

Spottiswoode enjoyed his education at the University of Glasgow and was a leader of the Presbyterians. Later, he supported the Scottish king James VI. , Who appointed him to his coronation as James I of England, Archbishop of Glasgow. Spottiswoode took the ideas of Thomas Erastus and was the main instrument of the king in the reshaping of the Scottish National Church according to the Anglican principles. 1615 he was appointed Archbishop of St. Andrews.
