John Stanmeyer

John Stan Meyer ( b. 1964 in Illinois ) is an American photographer and photojournalist.

Life and work

As a photographer, he documented, among others, the political changes in Eastern Europe, the conflict in southern Sudan, the war in Afghanistan, the impact of the earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and the unrest in East Timor in 2006.

In 1996 he moved to Hong Kong and lived for 12 years in Asia. He worked for the National Geographic Society, as well as between 1998 and 2008 for Time Magazine. During this time, 18 of his photographs was used as Time Magazine Covers. In 2001 he founded with six other international photojournalist the photo agency VII Photo Agency. In 2012 he photographed the documentary Starved for Attention.

In 1999 he received the Robert Capa Gold Medal in 2008 and the National Magazine Award. His photo of African refugees in Djibouti was awarded as a press photographer of the year 2013.

He lives with his wife Anastasia Stan Meyer and their three children on a farm in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts.
