John Stubbs

John Stubbs ( John Stubbe; * to 1543, † 1591 ) was an English politician.

Stubbs was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and was brother Thomas Cartwright. 1579 he published a paper that, attack the marriage plans of the English Queen Elizabeth I Tudor Duke of Anjou, François- Hercule de Valois - Angoulême, duc d' Alençon. For this he was sentenced and his right hand chopped off. In the execution of the judgment, he is alleged to have swung the other hand his hat to protest his loyalty to the Queen. Later he wrote a reply to William Allen and 1589 was Member of Parliament in the House of Commons.
