John Udall (Puritan)

John Udall (* around 1560, † 1592) was an English Puritan and writer.

Life

Udall became a priest, and looked for his criticism of the Episkopalsystem soon difficulties on the part of the hierarchy of the Church of England suspended. 1588 he brought out an anonymous pamphlet, which was widely read and earned him the suspicion of being one of the authors of the " Marprelate Tracts " ( 1588-89 ). ( Had provided from the true order, the Christ for the regiment of his church ) The second pamphlet, "A Demonstration of the Truth of did Discipline Which Christ Hath Prescribed for the Gouvernment of His Church ," was considered a political offense, as they attack an institution, which had been founded by royal order. Udall was sentenced to death; by intercession of Sir Walter Raleigh, he was pardoned, but he died in prison. Udall also published some of his speeches and a Hebrew grammar and a dictionary.
