John Warren (Canadian musician)

John Warren ( born September 23, 1938 in Montreal ) is a Canadian jazz musician (baritone saxophone, flute), which is in particular emerged as a composer.

Life and work

Warren was initially self-taught as a musician, then underwent but a conservatory education at McGill University. In 1962 he moved to England, where he played from 1967 in the Concert Band Mike Westbrook and 1968 own big band founded in the John Surman, Alan Skidmore, Ray Warleigh, Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Malcolm Griffiths and John Taylor participated. With this band and The Trio ( Surman, Barre Phillips, Stu Martin), he played in 1970 his debut album Tales of the Algonquin one. In 1972, he was with the London Jazz Composers Orchestra on tour. With his own band he was on two tours in Germany and Switzerland. On the initiative of John Surman, he put together his 1981 Brass Project, with whom he performed at international festivals and in 1992 recorded a CD for ECM. In 1990 he moved to York, where he led the Big Band Voice of the North launched The Warren Project, and from 1996 onwards. Since 2001, he composed for the specially created 12köpfige Northern Brass ( Double CD 2003).

Warren also wrote for the Danish Radio Big Band, the orchestra Kurt Edelhagen, the WDR Big Band, BBC Big Band, Norma Winstone, Alan Skidmore, Karin Krog and Tim Garland. In addition, he arranged for Louis Moholos Dedication Orchestra film scores for George Fenton. Between 1997 and 2002 he also worked as a music teacher at Newcastle College.
