John X of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp

Johann of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp, called Bishop Hans, ( born March 18, 1606 Gottorp Castle, † February 21, 1655 in Eutin ) was as John X Protestant prince bishop of the diocese of Lübeck.

Johann was the son of Duke Johann Adolf of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp and the nephew of the previous Prince-Bishop Johann Friedrich, whom he succeeded in 1634.

As the first of Lübeck Prince-Bishop Johann took permanent residence in Eutiner that made it expand and expand. He tried to draw scholars and scientists at his court, and to promote the economic development of the prince-bishopric; However, his efforts were hampered by the outbreak of the plague in the years 1638 and 1639, while at the same time of the Thirty Years' War the country imposed further burdens. So in his capital Eutin both 1638/39 and 1643 Danish troops were quartered, and in December 1643 a Swedish Cavalry Regiment, which had to be supplied from the country.

As in negotiating the Peace of Westphalia in Osnabrück the existence of the Prince-Bishopric of Lübeck was seriously compromised, because the possibility existed that it was slammed as a territorial compensation other states, succeeded Johann by skillful selection of excellent negotiator - first of Lübeck David Gloxin, then the Kammerrat Christian Cassius - avoid this risk and to ensure the survival of his country.

Family

Johann married on 7 May 1640, the Princess Julia Felicitas von Württemberg- Weiltingen ( 1619-1661 ), daughter of Duke Julius Friedrich.
