Johnny Mandel

Johnny Mandel ( born November 23, 1925 in New York, New York) is an American composer for jazz and film music as well as trumpet and trombone.

Life and work

Johnny Mandel studied at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. In 1943, he played first trumpet with Joe Venuti, 1944 Billy Rogers and trombone in the orchestras of Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey, Buddy Rich, Georgie Auld and Chubby Jackson. As Arrangeuer he created the bebop sound of the orchestra by Henry Jerome. In 1949 he accompanied the orchestra by Bob Cooper, the singer June Christy. 1951-1953 he played and arranged in the band of Elliott Lawrence, 1953 at Count Basie. Then he settled in Los Angeles, where he worked as a bass trumpeter for Zoot Sims and 1958 wrote the music for the film I Want To Live. He wrote, inter alia, the jazz compositions Not Really the Blues for Woody Herman in 1949, Hershey Bar in 1950 and Pot Luck 1953 Stan Getz, Straight Life 1953 Low Life 1956 Count Basie and Tommyhawk 1954 Chet Baker. Beginning of the 60s he was the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band operates ( " Barbara 's Theme ").

In the 1960s, Johnny Mandel turned more to the film and entertainment music. In 1966, he and Paul Francis Webster received the Grammy for "Song of the Year" with the song The Shadow of Your Smile ( Love Theme from The Sandpiper ). This song also won an Oscar. The song was later interpreted in many versions, including Tony Bennett. Johnny Mandel worked with many known quantities, for example, with Count Basie in the 1950s, Frank Sinatra ( Ring a Ding Ding 1960) and Shirley Horn.

In 1992, he won the Grammy for " Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal " for his involvement in the album Unforgettable by Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole. In 1993 he received the same price for the album Here's to Life by Shirley Horn ( 1991).

2003 produced and arranged almond along with David Foster and Humberto Gatica, the debut album of the singer Michael Bublé. In 2007 he was hired by Bublé again. Dream, the thirteenth and final track of his No.1 album Call Me Irresponsible was orchestrated by Mandel and co-produced.

In 2004, he contributed significantly to a success of Tony Bennett, who won a Grammy for the album The Art of Romance, in which Johnny Mandel led the orchestra. Previously, the two musicians had worked together in 1966 on the album Movie Song Album, almond had with this album the musical director.

The best-known compositions include the theme song of the series M * A * S * H 4077, Suicide Is Painless, as well as the songs Close Enough for Love, Emily and A Time for Love.
