Johnny Moore (trumpeter)

Johnny " Dizzy " Moore (born John Arlington Moore, born October 5, 1938 in Kingston, † August 16, 2008 in Jamaica) was an American trumpeter Jamaican descent. He was a founding member of The Skatalites and collaborated with numerous artists in the ska and reggae genre. His trumpet playing influenced many musicians from the ska and reggae scene.

Biography

Johnny Moore was born in Kingston and learned to play the trumpet at the Alpha Boys School. In order to be accepted to the school, which actually recorded only problem children, he began to play pranks and to be unduly restrained, to his mother, who was little on his musical education, was convinced him to enroll there.

At school he met his future bandmates and ska pioneers Don Drummond and Lester Sterling, and other musical greats of Jamaica, as Rico Rodriguez know. After Moore had his degree, he played in the Jamaica Military Band and got there his nickname Johnny Blow Blow missed. His early influences were jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. After three years he was dishonorably discharged from the army. He joined the then Mapletoft Poulle Orchestra on, had to leave this but because of his Rastafarian faith. He then joined several local bands, until in 1963 along with his former classmates raised the Skatalites from the baptism. From his bandmates he was nicknamed Dizzy missed, which was based on his " dizzying " solos. He remained until the dissolution in 1965, on the occasion of the arrest of Don Drummond, part of the group and also participated in the Reunion 1983. He was also a member of the successor band The Supersonics Tommy McCook. In the 1960s, Moore moved to New York City, but returned in the 1980s back to Jamaica.

In addition to his involvement as Skatalites member, he had a solo career and participated in many recordings and tours for other bands such as Bob Marley & The Wailers, Bunny Wailer and Lee Perry. He is also a founding member of The Jamaican All Stars. In addition, he is regarded as the most sought after musicians in the Studio One label by Clement Dodd.

Until his death in 2008 he remained both the Skatalites, as also get the Jamaican All Stars. On August 16, he died of cancer.
