Johnny Roosval

Johnny Roosval ( full name John August Emanuel Roosval ) ( born August 29, 1879 in Kalmar, † October 18, 1965 in Stockholm) was a Swedish art historian.

After leaving school in 1897 Roosval studied until 1899 at Uppsala University and graduated from there with a Bachelor of Arts. Subsequently, he studied art history at the University of Berlin in Adolph Goldschmidt and Heinrich Wölfflin, where he received his doctorate in 1903 also altars in Swedish churches from the workshop of Jan Borman in Brussels. In the same year he got his first job at the Nordic Museum and then in 1905 a lecturer in art history at Uppsala, from 1920 professor at the University of Stockholm and today was 1936/37, the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard. In 1942 he retired.

Was Roosval art historians as a specialist in the architecture and art of the Middle Ages, especially the churches on the island of Gotland. Together with Jon Sigurd Curman (1879-1966) he was the impetus for the publication of the large inventory Sveriges Kyrkor. (Eng.: Churches in Sweden). After a first test tape from 1912 the work appeared in about 225 volumes.

Roosvall was a member of several academies, among others, Kungliga och Vitterhets History Antikvitets Academies (since 1926). 1952 awarded the University of Uppsala him out with the theological honorary doctorate.
