The Johns Hopkins University ( JHU ) is a private university in Baltimore, USA. It was founded on 22 February 1876 as the first university in the United States, the combined research and teaching on the model of German universities. It took its name from Johns Hopkins, a heritage of 7 million dollars left behind establishing the University and the Johns Hopkins Hospital when he died in 1873.

Importance and classification

The JHU is an elite high school, which plays a leading role in key areas such as medicine, health sciences and international politics. It is third in the world of the most cited research institutions and is managed in university rankings regularly among the 15 best universities in the world. Although not one of the universities in the so-called Ivy League, it still is one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Your Medical School and the Bloomberg School of Public Health are leading facilities for medicine and public health as the world. The same applies for the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS ) in Washington, DC and Bologna in the field of international politics and economics. The Clinic of the Medical Faculty, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, stands in the annual hospital ranking of the weekly magazine U.S. News & World Report for about 20 years at No. 1

About 35 - under the more stringent criteria of the JHU even just 25 - as alumni or teachers with their associated persons received in any form until now a Nobel Prize. These include James Franck and Adam Riess ( Nobel Prize for Physics ), Joseph Erlanger (Nobel Prize for Medicine ), Bernard Lown representative of the organization IPPNW ( International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War ) and Woodrow Wilson ( Nobel Peace Prizes ), Richard Stone and Simon Kuznets ( Nobel prize in Economics ) and JM Coetzee, who worked here as a visiting professor (Nobel prize for Literature ).

The Johns Hopkins University is a founding member of the Association of American Universities, an existing association of leading research-intensive since 1900, North American universities. Currently, 19,019 students are enrolled at the university.

The University had in 2007 with 1.554 billion U.S. dollars, the highest spending on research and development among U.S. universities.

The JHU consists of eight academic institutions, spread over four locations:

Sports

The sports teams at Johns Hopkins University are called the Blue Jays. The university is a member of the Centennial Conference. Particularly successful is the lacrosse team.
