Jonas ÄŒepulis

Čepulis Jonas ( born August 11, 1939 in Zvanagalos, Lithuania) is a former Soviet boxer Lithuanian origin. He was winner of the silver medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City in the heavyweight division.

Career

Jonas Čepulis grew up in his home town Zvanagalos. In 1948 he was deported along with his family by the Soviet security organs to Siberia. Only in 1957, the family was allowed to return to Lithuania. Jonas Čepulis went to Kaunas and began with the boxes. After his talent was recognized, he was delegated to the Lithuanian top club " Zalgiris " Kaunas and trained there by Vaclav Peleckis.

Jonas Čepulis was a full-grown heavyweights of approximately 95 kg body weight. In 1963 he was Lithuanian heavyweight champion for the first time. This title he also won in 1964, 1966, 1967, 1969 and 1970. In 1965 he succeeded in Kaunas victory at a major national boxing tournament, where he to the first guard of the Soviet heavyweight scoring Jānis Lancers defeated in the final of the. In the same year he also started the first time at the Soviet Championship and fought there equal to the finals, where he but lost to Alexander Isossimow on points.

1966 took Jonas Čepulis at the Soviet Championship in the heavyweight division 3rd place, after he had once again lost in the semifinals against Alexander Isossimow. In 1967 he won the national elimination tournament for the Soviet championship in Voskresensk. But at the Soviet Championship even he could not participate due to injury.

In 1968, Jonas Čepulis again reached the final, where he lost to the young Alexander Wasjuchkin at the Soviet Championship. Shortly afterwards he won in Eger / Hungary at the " Istvan Dobo " tournament in the finals of the heavy weight on Karl Koglbauer from Austria by KO in the 1st round. He was nominated by the then Soviet boxing association for the Olympic Games in Mexico City. In the Olympic tournament, he showed his enormous impact force and defeated Billy Wells from Great Britain by TKO in the 3rd round, Bernd Anders from the GDR by KO in the 3rd round and Joaquin Rocha from Mexico by TKO in the 3rd round. He was a finalist and met the U.S. champion George Foreman. George Foreman won this duel between two hard beating Fighter, because he was physically stronger than Jonas Čepulis, by technical knockout in the second round. Winning the silver medal was still a great success for Jonas Čepulis.

In 1969, Jonas Čepulis started again at the Soviet Championship, but lost already in the second round against the Moldovans Gennadi Schimansky and retired early. After this defeat, he was employed at no more international championships. After his playing career was Jonas Čepulis coach at " Zalgiris " Kaunas.
