Jonathan Pila

Jonathan S. Pila is an Australian mathematician.

Life and work

Jonathan Pila studied mathematics, earning in 1984 a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Melbourne. In 1988 he was at Stanford University with a thesis on Frobenius Maps of Abelian Varieties and Finding Roots of Unity in Finite Fields for Ph.D. doctorate. His doctoral advisor was Peter Sarnak. Pila is Reader at the University of Oxford.

Pila deals with model theory and number theory. He proved the André- Oort conjecture ( named after Yves André and Frans Oort ) assume for products of modular curves on the first occasion without the generalized Riemann hypothesis. For this he received the 2011 Clay Research Award and the Senior Whitehead Prize. 2013 he held the Tarski Lectures.
