Jonathon Riley

Jonathon Riley CB, DSO ( born January 16, 1955 in Yorkshire ) is a historian and former officer in the British Army; last rank Lieutenant - General. He was General Officer Commanding (GOC ) of the Multi- National Division (South - East) in Iraq and deputy commander of ISAF.

Life

Riley attended St. Mary 's School in Beverley and Kingston Grammar School in London. Then he studied geography at University College London. He earned his master's degree in history from the University of Leeds and his Ph.D. at Cranfield University. From 1971 to 2009 he was a soldier in the Royal Welch Fusiliers of the British Army. The officer was working abroad in Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. He has received, among others the Legion of Merit of the United States.
