Jöns Bengtsson Oxenstierna

Jöns Bengtsson Oxenstierna and Jöns Bengtsson (* 1417, † December 15, 1467 on the Åland Islands) was Archbishop of Uppsala, 1465-1466 Regent of Sweden. He came from the Swedish noble family Oxenstierna.

Jöns Bengtsson was archbishop of the Archdiocese of Uppsala in 1448; on 30 June of that year he was ordained a bishop. Previously, he was archpriest of the cathedral. At the same time, Charles VIII had himself crowned King of Sweden. Just one day after his own consecration crowned Jöns Bengtsson Charles wife Katarina Gumsehuvud the Swedish queen.

Despite the support of the Swedish king, the archbishop stood in the subsequent disputes over the independence of Sweden or the maintenance of the Kalmar Union to the Danish King Christian I, because King Charles had begun to raise taxes and confiscate church property. In 1457 he placed in the Cathedral of Uppsala from his insignia and announced that he would take them again until at hand when King Charles had been sold. Jöns Bengtsson This raised Erik Axelsson Tott, together with the head of the opposition and King Charles was driven to Gdansk.

But Christian I. imposed Sweden and the Swedish Church on high taxes. When the king for some time resided in Finland and Jöns Bengtsson was used as a regent, he made the mood to Use and stopped the tax revenue. He was then arrested by King Christian I. and transferred to Denmark. As a result, there has been a revolution in Sweden and Charles VIII has been recalled. Then Christian I reconciled again with the Archbishop, released him and sent him to Sweden. There, he succeeded again, Charles VIII discontinued.

Following the dismissal of the Swedish King Christian I Jöns Bengtsson began again as regent. However, his actions and demeanor brought upon the people against him, so that dropped him, his former companion Erik Axelsson. With a friend on the Åland Islands, he found refuge, where he died on December 15, 1467.
