Through a series of failures disease Lehnigk came at the Olympics to an unusual use: In German coxless four rowers were two before the semi finals ill. This could be compensated by the use of two scheduled replacement rower Richard Schmidt and Marco Neumann first, the boat managed the final. Before the finale, however, fell ill and Neumann, so that rowers had to move up from another boat in order to contest the race can. Since the aft Germany had not qualified for the finals, the national coach, eight rowers Jochen Urban decided to put in the quad and instead use Lehnigk for the B-final in eighth. This took over the position of the Bugmanns, but the German boat defeated the Chinese team, finishing in last place.

After the Olympics Lehnigk ended his career.
