Jörgen Jönsson

Jörgen Jönsson ( born September 29, 1972 in Ängelholm ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player, current coach and functionary.

Career

Jörgen Jönsson started his professional career at Rögle BK in the Swedish second league. 1992 succeeded the team promotion to the Elitserien. 1994 Jönsson was a member of the Swedish team that won the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games.

In the same year he was selected by the Calgary Flames in the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 in the ninth round at position 227. Jönsson remained until 1995 Rögle but then changed within the league to Färjestad BK.

1998 transferred the Calgary Flames the rights to Jönsson to the New York Islanders. In the same year he won the World Championship with the Swedish three crowns team. In summer 1999, Jönsson finally went into the NHL with the Islanders. However, he had transferred a permanent place in the team, was established in March 2000 on the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, where he completed another 13 games.

In the fall of 2000 he was back in Sweden for Färjestad on the ice. In 2002, he won the championship with the team. In 2006 he won for the second time Olympic gold, won the world championship and the playoffs the Elitserien. After the 2008/ 09 season Jörgen Jönsson ended his playing career. He then became an assistant coach and general manager at Färjestad.

Mostly Jörgen Jönsson was captain of the Swedish national team when the NHL stars were not in the squad. His brother Kenny Jönsson played several years in the NHL, including 1999/2000 together with Jörgen in New York. Kenny is now an assistant coach in the Swedish second league in Rögle BK.
