José Cardoso Pires

José Cardoso Pires ( born October 2, 1925 in São João do Peso, Portugal, † October 26, 1998 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese writer who has worked primarily as a novelist.

Life

Cardoso Pires was born into a middle-class family, his father was a member of the merchant fleet of Portugal. He studied mathematics, was from 1969 to 1972 editor of the daily newspaper Diário de Lisboa and taught Portuguese literature at King's College in London.

In 1989 he received the Order of Merit and in 1997 the Portuguese top literary award, the Prémio Pessoa.

Some of his works have been translated into German.
