José da Costa Nunes

Cardinal José da Costa Nunes ( born March 15, 1880 in Candelária, Azores, † November 29, 1976 in Rome) was Patriarch of the East Indies and later Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

José da Costa Nunes received his theological and philosophical education in the seminary of Angra do Heroismo. At the end of his studies, he went as a missionary to Macao, where he received the sacrament of priestly ordination on June 4, 1903. From 1903 to 1906 he worked as a counselor and lecturer. 1906 appointed him to the local bishop vicar general of Macao and Timor. José da Costa Nunes founded the magazine " Oriente ".

1920 Pope Benedict XV appointed him. Bishop of Macao, in 1940 he transferred Pope Pius XII. the management of the Archdiocese of Goa, with the title of Patriarch of the East Indies is associated. 1953 was José da Costa Nunes President of the Standing Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses. 1953 appointed him Titular Archbishop of Odessus the Pope, in December of the same year he became Vice - Camerlengo of Holy Roman Church. Pope John XXIII. took him on 19 March 1962 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Prisca on the College of Cardinals. Cardinal José da Costa Nunes participated in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. He died November 29, 1976 in Rome and was initially buried in the local cemetery " Campo Verano ", before his remains were transferred to the Church of Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi.
