José de Rezabal y Ugarte

José de Ugarte y Rezabal (* 1747 in Vitoria- Gasteiz, Basque Country, Spain, † July 19, 1800 in Santiago de Chile) was a Spanish judge and colonial administrator, on interim basis, has held the office of governor in the Captaincy General of Chile.

He was married to Juana Catalina Micheo y Jiménez de Lobatón (since 1787).

Life

In 1795 he went as Chairman of the Real Audiencia of Chile back to Santiago. In 1796 he officiated on an interim basis on 16 May as governor after his predecessor Ambrosio O'Higgins was appointed Viceroy of Peru. On September 18, 1796, he handed the office to Gabriel de Avilés. Rezabal received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Charles III for his services. and shortly before his death in 1800 an honorary member of the India Council (Spanish: Consejo de Indias ), the supreme body of the South African colonial administration of the Spaniards, was appointed.

Rezabal is the author of numerous legal journals and has brought for his own releases, the first printing press to Chile.
