José Enrique Moyal

José Enrique Moyal ( born October 1, 1910 in Jerusalem, † 22 May 1998 in Canberra) was an Australian mathematician and physicist.

Life

He has worked in the field of mathematical physics. He contributed the phase space to explain using statistical formulas and made proposals concerning the Weyl quantization. His work also included special derivations of the Poisson bracket and a reformulation of the Heisenberg picture.

He grew up in Palestine and studied in France. After starting his career in Belfast and Manchester, he came to Australia in 1958 and has worked at the Australian National University. Then went to Chicago at the Argonne National Laboratory before a mathematics professor at Macquarie University was for five years. In 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from the Australian National University. According to him, the Moyal Medal is referred to an award of Macquarie University.
