José Fogaça

José Alberto Fogaça de Medeiros ( born January 13, 1947 in Porto Alegre) is a Brazilian lawyer, journalist and politician of the party PMDB.

He attended the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, where he graduated in law. Later he worked as a journalist, writer and radio presenter in Porto Alegre and São Paulo.

Political career

From 1983 to 1986, Fogaça deputy in the lower house of Brazil. From 1987 to 2003 he was a senator in the Federal Senate of Brazil. Two years after his term Fogaça won the mayoral election to prefeito in his hometown of Porto Alegre. From 2005 to March 30, 2010, he was the city prefect. After 5 years in office Fogaça handed over his post to his vice mayor José Fortunati, as governor of Rio Grande do Sul, he contested the election, but for which he received only 24.74 % of the vote.

With his wife Isabela together José Fogaça is incidentally also known as a composer and successful. His best-known composition is the unofficial anthem of Porto Alegre, entitled Porto Alegre É Demais.
