José Ignacio de Gorriti

José Ignacio de Gorriti ( born July 30, 1770 in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina, † November 9, 1835 in Charcas, Bolivia ) was an Argentine politician and general of the Revolutionary War. He was several times governor of the Province of Salta and deputy this province on the Congreso de Tucumán in 1816.

Life

Born as the son of Ignacio de Gorriti Navarro and María Feliciana Coeto, he went to school at Franciscan Fathers and was then with his brother Juan Ignacio (which should be a famous theologian later) sent to study in Córdoba ( Argentina). In 1789 he had to return because of his father's death to Jujuy to manage the Finca " Los Horcones " in the department of Rosario de la Frontera, which was family owned. In 1802 he married Facunda Zuviría, with whom he had several children, including a daughter named Juana Manuela Gorriti to be a famous writer later and was to marry the future president of Bolivia, Manuel Isidoro Belzu.

In 1810 he was one of the most determined and most dedicated representatives of the so-called May Revolution of the Argentine independence movement against the Spanish colonial rule. As a revolutionary leader in Salta, he fought on the side of Martín Miguel de Güemes and Manuel Belgrano and put the Ejército del Norte money, food and transportation such as Mules available. In 1816 he was elected by the people as a deputy in the Congress of Tucumán. Later he became Minister of Güemes and several times governor of Salta; as such, he put himself in a very progressive for that time policy, which was close to the Party of Unitarios, including for public education, health and welfare.

In 1831 he was forced to flee with his own large family and several other refugees to Bolivia due to a loss to the enemy caudillo Juan Facundo Quiroga of the Federals; In 1835 he died completely depleted in exile.
