There he played in the 2000 season / 01 ( second round ) and 2001/ 2002 for the French club Racing Strasbourg, with whom he cut off relegation at the end of the table in the French second division in 2002. In the next round against the eventual champions France, he took his team, which was described by many critics as grossly overtaxed, almost single-handedly to the extension in which Laurent Blanc via Golden Goal scored for France and the game decided.

After Chilavert was the last time voted " World's Best Goalkeeper of the Year" in 1998, he emerged since 2001 is no longer included in the statistics of the ten world's best goalkeepers and finished his career in 2002.
