José Manuel Blecua Teijeiro

José Manuel Blecua Teijeiro ( born January 10, 1913 in Alcolea de Cinca, Huesca Province; † March 8, 2003 in Barcelona) was a Spanish linguist and Hispanist.

Life and work

Blecua came in 1923 with his family to Zaragoza, where he was by Miguel Labordeta, the father of the writer Miguel Labordeta ( 1921-1969 ) and José Antonio Labordeta, led to the literature. He graduated in 1933 with a double degree in law and philology from, taught as a high school teacher, first in Almería, then 20 years in Zaragoza, founded the publishing house Editorial Ebro, received his doctorate in 1944 and in 1959 appointed to the University of Barcelona, where he was until his retirement in 1983 Department of Spanish language and literature occupied.

Blecua published numerous works on the Spanish literary history. He was active especially as the editor of the great writers of the Siglo de Oro, but in addition also by poets of the 20th century. Among his most famous works, edited by Damaso Alonso Antología counts de la poesía española de tipo tradicional lírica (Madrid 1956).

Blecua 1982 was an honorary member of the Real Academia Española. He received the 1986 Premio de las letras Aragón (now Premio de las Letras Aragoneses ) and 1993 the Premio Internacional Menéndez Pelayo. Blecua honorary degrees from the universities of Montpellier and Zaragoza. In Zaragoza, a high school is named after him.

Blecua was the father of the Romanists and linguists José Manuel Blecua Perdices (* 1939), with whom he is sometimes confused.
