José Miguel de Velasco is a province in the northeastern part of the Department of Santa Cruz in the lowlands of the South American Andean Republic of Bolivia.

The province was established in October 12, 1880 and bears her name in honor of General José Miguel de Velasco, four times President of Bolivia.

Location

The province is one of fifteen provinces in the department of Santa Cruz. It is bordered to the west by the province Ñuflo de Chávez, on the south by the province of Chiquitos, on the southeast by the province Ángel Sandoval, on the east by the Republic of Brazil, and on the northeast by the Department of Beni.

It extends between 13 ° 30 'and 17 ° 10' south latitude and 59 ° 25 'and 62 ° 05 ' west longitude, its length from north to south is 500 km, its width is up to 300 kilometers.

Population

The population of the province of José Miguel de Velasco has risen in the past two decades by about half:

49.3 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. 99.2 percent of the population speak Spanish, Quechua 2.5 percent, 0.6 percent and 0.6 percent Aymara and Guaraní.

72.3 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 35.5 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

94.5 percent of the population are Catholics, 4.1 percent are Protestant (1992).
