José Ramos Preto

José Ramos Preto (* 1871 in Louriçal do Campo, Castelo Branco, † January 7, 1949 ) was a Portuguese lawyer and politician. He was from June 6 to June 26, 1920 during the First Republic briefly Prime Minister of his country.

Life

José Ramos Preto was one of the richest landowners of his hometown and therefore had in Castelo Branco about significant political influence. He was principal of the high school, civil governor and elected senator for the District of Castelo Branco. As the Portuguese Prime Minister António Maria Baptista on June 6, 1920 suffered a stroke during a cabinet meeting and passed away, Ramos Preto was elected his successor. The government Ramos Preto was purely a transitional government, already on 18 June, he had to submit his resignation. As the search for a successor has been difficult, he remained still until June 26, a caretaker in charge when António Maria da Silva was elected as the new prime minister.
