Josef Augusta (paleontologist)

Josef Augusta ( born March 17, 1903 in Boskowitz; † February 4, 1968 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak paleontologist.

Life

Augusta, the son of a tax inspector, studied after attending high school Boskovický 1921-1925 Science at Masaryk University in Brno. During his studies, and after that he worked until 1931 as an assistant at the local geological institute. Since 1932 he has taught at the school in Oels, but changes at the Charles University in Prague a year later. In 1939 he was appointed professor, then work, after the closure of the university during the Second World War on the state geological institute. After the war he returned to the university where he taught until 1968 and from 1957 held the position of Dean of the geological- geographical faculty until 1959.

Among his pupils was Zdeněk V. spinar.

Research

Augusta mainly dealt with the study of the flora and fauna of the Permian. He became famous for his popular science activities in the field of paleontology, stratigraphy and geology.

Works

Augusta delivered for the Czech painter Zdeněk Burian templates for prehistoric landscapes and dinosaurs, which he partly sketched itself. They created some paleontological reconstructions that were imposed in book form and abroad. In addition, he wrote more than 120 scientific papers and was on film directed by Karel Zeman journey into prehistoric times ( Cesta do pravěku ) involved as a scientific advisor.
