Josef Odložil

Josef Odložil ( born November 11, 1938 in Otrokovice; † 10 September 1993 Domašov ) is a former Czechoslovak athlete who was successful in the 1960s as a middle-distance runner. He participated in two Olympic Games and won a silver medal.

Life

Josef Odložil spent his childhood in Bela pod Pradědem. The eight km long way to school he put on foot - running - back. However, with the Athletics, he started at the age of 18 years. He first joined the club " Slovan " in Olomouc at. His coach was Jaroslav Slavíček. When he moved to Košice purpose of performing his compulsory military service, he became a member of the local club " Slavia ". His new coach for the next two years was January Liska, under whose care he ran all distances between 400 and 2000 m. 1961 to 1968, he launched under Aleksandr Zvolenský and Aleš Poděbrad for the Prague Dukla clubs and Sparta.

After ending his playing career in 1969, he became coach of Sparta Prague.

In 1977 he received his doctorate at Prague's Charles University. The topic of his thesis was: "The training of top runners over 800 m ".

From 1979-81 he worked at the National Institutes Del Deporte in Mexico.

From 1992-93 he commanded a Peace Corps in Iraq. He had to leave for political reasons, the armed forces late 60s, however, had been rehabilitated after the turn.

From his first marriage with the gymnastics Olympic champion Věra Čáslavská, whom he married during the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968, went a Son ( Martin). With his second wife, Eva, he had two more children ( daughter Andrea and son Honza ).

In 1993, it came at a restaurant in Domašov to an altercation between Joseph Odlozil and his son Martin, during which Martin back stuck his father, whereupon he hit his head on the counter edge and died because of his injuries after a one-month coma.

Since 1993, held in Prague every year instead of a Josef- Odložil Memorial.

On the occasion of its tenth anniversary of the death his sister Miloslava Ševčíková published a biography entitled " Proste zabil jsem svého OTCE " (engl.: "I just killed my father ").

European Championships

In European Championships Josef Odložil had little success. 1962 in Belgrade, in his first international competition, he came with 1:51,0 min for 800 meters only to the semifinals, and in Budapest in 1966, he retired about 1500 m with 3:42,1 min already in the run- off.

At the European Indoor Games 1967 in Prague, he won the 1500m silver in 3:49,6 min
