Josef Seger

Josef Ferdinand Norbert Seger (also Seeg ( e) r, Segert; born March 21, 1716 in Řepín, † April 22, 1782 in Prague) was a Bohemian organist and composer and one of the most important representatives of the Old Bohemian school.

Seger was a student of Bohuslav Matej Černohorský. He worked as a singer and violinist at various Prague churches. 1741, he became organist at the Tyn Church and 1745 at the Kreuzherrenkirche. His most important students were January and Josef Antonín Koželuh Mysliveček. 1782 intended Emperor Joseph II, who was impressed by Segers organ to confer on him the position of court organist in Vienna, but Seger died before receiving the appointment decree. Seger was a prolific composer. He wrote several hundred organ pieces ( Preludes, Toccatas and Fugues ), masses, motets, psalms and litanies. His works were forgotten for a long time and were only rediscovered in the early 20th century.
