Josef W. Meri

Josef W. Meri (Arabic يوسف وليد مرعي / Yūsuf Waleed al -Mar ʿ ī / Hebrew יוסף מרעי; * 1969 in Chicago, United States) is an American scholar in the field of pre-modern Islamic history and culture and dialogue between religions. His family is from Jerusalem. Meri is the editor of the Encyclopedia of Islamic civilization in the Middle Ages ( Medieval Islamic Civilization: An Encyclopedia ), which is published by Routledge.

Life

Josef W. Meri studied at the University of Oxford Medieval Islamic Studies. He was a Special Scholar -in-Residence at the Royal Aal al - Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought ( Royal Aal al - Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought ), Jordan, and project coordinator of the Great Tafsir of the Qur'an Project and one of the 138 signatories of the open letter A Common Word between Us and You (English A common Word between Us and you), the personalities of Islam to "leaders of Christian churches everywhere" (English " leaders of Christian churches, everywhere ... " ) sent (October 13, 2007). He was Academic Director of the Centre for the Study of Muslim - Jewish Relations of the Woolf Institute in Cambridge and Fellow of St. Edmund's College, Cambridge University.

Since 2013 Meri Alliance Visiting Professor of Islamic Studies at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.
