Josep Fontserè i Mestre

Josep Fontserè i Mestre ( * 1829 in Barcelona, † 1897 in Barcelona) was a Catalan architect ( mestre d' obres ). Stylistically include Fontserès Structures late historicism. He is, however, especially with the iron structures of the Umbracle (, shade house ') in the Parc de la Ciutadella, and the Mercat del Born as an important pioneer of Modernism.

Biographical information

Josep Fontserè was the son of the carpenter and architect Josep Domènech i Fontserè and brother of the architect Eduard Fontserè. He attended trade school of the Junta de Comerç (trade union ) in exchange building of Barcelona, after which the builder school. He received his master builder license in 1853. His first major work was the rebuilding of the Theatre Olimp. In the meantime, he worked as an assistant to Ildefonso Cerdà in road projects.

In 1859 he was awarded the competition for the expansion of the city of Barcelona, the third honorable mention (equivalent to 4th place). Winner of the competition was Antoni Rovira i Trias, but eventually became the Pla Cerdà by Ildefonso Cerdà designed. 1869 another designed by Fontserè theater was opened, the Teatre Circ Barcelonès. ( The old Teatre Circ by Antoni Rovira i Trias was burnt down in 1863) in 1870 won Fontserè the competition for development of the Parc de la Ciutadella and built in the years that followed, the park, the enclosure including wrought iron gates, the cascade fountain with sculptures by Joan Flotats, Llorenç Matamala and Rossend Nobas, a water reservoir, a milk bar, a cafe and the Umbracle ( shade house). Antoni Gaudí worked at this time as a student in Fontserès office and was involved in the design of the enclosure and the cascade fountain. He also calculated the statics for the new water tank and got to have to drop the static testimony without a test.

Through an intrigue Fontserè was forced to resign as head of the work in the park. 1888 World's Fair was held on the premises. For Fontserès Cafe was demolished and built in its place, the Café del Parc Lluís Domènech i Montaner of, now known as the Castell dels Tres Dragons. Fonterès Umbracle was rebuilt in 1886 by Jaume gusta i Bondia, 1888 but restored to the original state for the Universal Exhibition of Josep Amargós i Samaranch.

1873-1876 built Josep Mercat del Born Fontserè, the first major iron construction in Barcelona.

He is also the author of the gardens of Torre Melina (1875 ) and several Häuserl in Barcelona, ​​1886, he renovated the premises of the Cercle del Liceu. In Cambrils he built the Parc Samà in Xerta Retiro is attributed to the Villa, a luxurious villa in colonial style influenced by modernism.
