Joseph Alexander Ames

Joseph Alexander Ames ( * 1816 in Roxbury, New Hampshire, † 1872 in New York City ) was an American portrait painter.

Life and work

Ames studied in America and later in Rome in Italy. He worked in Boston, Baltimore, and later in New York City. In 1969 he became an Associate of the National Academy of Design, a year later he was Academician. 1855 Ames was a founding member of the Boston Art Club and was elected as its first president.

Among his most famous works was "The Death of Webster " and portrait of Abraham Lincoln and James Topham Brady at the Metropolitan Museum. The image of a gypsy girl is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
