Joseph Aloys Schmittbaur

Joseph Aloys Schmitt Baur ( born November 8, 1718, Bamberg, † October 24, 1809 in Karlsruhe ) was a German composer, court music, instrument maker and music teacher.

Life

Joseph Aloys Schmitt Baur received his musical education by the Würzburg court organ builder Johann Philipp seuffert. He was also a pupil of Niccolò Jommelli, probably in Bologna. Around 1750 he was employed in the court orchestra of Rastatt, where he was concertmaster in 1759 and in 1766 Kapellmeister. During this time he set German and Italian works for the stage. After the dissolution of Rastatt chapel he was concertmaster in the court orchestra in Karlsruhe. From January 1775 Schmittbaur given the position of Kapellmeister in Cologne, where he sustained coined the conservative musical life through the concerts of the " musical academies ".
