Joseph Daul

Joseph Daul ( born April 13, 1947 in Strasbourg ) is a French politician of the conservative UMP. He is a member of the European Parliament, where he chairs the Group of the European People's Party (EPP ). As MEPs Daul is a member of the Conference of Presidents. Since October 8, 2013, he is also - due to the death of Wilfried Martens - Acting Chairman of the EPP.

Youth, students and professionals

Daul grew up with six siblings on the family farm and took over at the age of 20 years operation. He holds a degree in agriculture at the Ecole d'Agriculture and the École du syndicalisme agricole and graduated in 1981 at the Institut des hautes études de la défense national from. He grew up bilingual with Alsatian and French.

Daul is a member of the French Farmers' Association and in 1976 was elected vice-president of the youth organization of the Centre National des Jeunes Agriculteurs, where he was familiar mainly with European policy. In the wake of the BSE crisis in 1997 he became chairman of French beef producers' association Fédération Nationale Française des producteurs de viande bovine.

Political functions and awards

Between 1989 and 2002, Joseph Daul was mayor of the municipality Pfettisheim and since 2002 has been deputy mayor of Pfettisheim and Vice President of the Communauté de communes du Kocher mountain. In the European elections of 1999 he was elected to the European Parliament and re-elected in 2004 and 2009. He was from the beginning a member of the Agriculture Committee and its chairman from 2002 to 2004. During this period he was also Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament. In 1999 he was part of the delegation of the European Parliament at the WTO conference in Seattle in 2001, he was involved in Doha at the opening of the so-called Doha Round, 2003, he participated in the WTO conference in Cancún.

Daul was awarded the Order of Merit for Agriculture, Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite and the Legion of Honor.

Against Joseph Daul was determined from 2004 in France on charges of misuse of public funds. The investigation, however, were set in August 2007.

Personal

Joseph Daul lives in Alsace Pfettisheim, is married since 1969 and has two children.
