Joseph Davilmar Théodore

Joseph Théodore Davilmar (* 1847 in Ouanaminthe; † in Port -au -Prince, 1917 ) was a Haitian politician and President of Haiti.

Life

After school he joined the Army, where he rose to become major. Later he worked as a teacher and as a diplomat.

His political career began as a senator. As a nationalist, he refused any kind from American occupation and underlined this attitude by the fact that he fought as a leader of the insurgent peasants ( Cacos ) against the government army in Ouanaminthe and moved with his troops towards the capital Port-au -Prince.

On November 6, 1914, he was the successor of Oreste Zamor President of Haiti. Because of its anti-American stance, he was overthrown by a US-backed coup d'etat under the command of Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam on February 21, 1915. Here, he was also the undoing of that as he promised could not pay the wages of the rebellious peasants and thus these also turned against him.

After his fall, he went first for some time in exile in Curacao. However, he returned still under the U.S. protectorate to Haiti, where he died in Port -au -Prince in 1917. However, no state funeral was given him.
